Today's class was enticing and educational. We started a new topic of engineering. It's a subject that I feel many students don't know much about; however, we need the work of engineers in our every day lives. We began class brainstorming the necessary engineers for a spaceship liftoff. The endless list included jobs, like chemist, atmospheric engineer, fabric scientists, biochemists, communications engineers, space food providers, etc. This activity really got me thinking about the wide variety of occupations in our society that involve specific types of engineers. Our BIG IDEA for class was to never give up hope and to overlook failure. "We need to see the POWER of FAILURE in DESIGN!" It was a fluke that Arthur Fry came across Post-Its. It was an accident that James Wright invented Silly Putty during WWII. The noted, Thomas Edison failed multiple times before discovering the light bulb. We need to remember this quote not only in the classroom, but in our every day lives as we encounter hardships and adversity.
